Herbert Klettke uses the scene of the scourging to create an allegory of the terrible times that have just passed. Although the scourged man certainly has features that can be identified with Christ - after all, the unholy times have sinned against God - the henchmen look like contemporaries, the brutality written all over the torturer's face as he holds the whip in his fist.
